Why ‘Going for Gold’?

In the run up to 2012 we know that many schools will wish to run Olympics themed initiatives. For this purpose, the Extended Services team (along with schools input) has created a study support student led resource pack called ‘Going for Gold’.

Going for Gold provides learners with the critical thinking skills to analyse local, regional and national realities surrounding the Olympic Games whilst developing an understanding of the globalised role of the Games.

The Going for Gold resource has the potential to combine all these as well as support a number of curriculum areas & key skills such as:

• Speaking and listening, problem solving, team building, student leadership, dialogue and enquiry

How can it work for you?

Going for Gold provides you with opportunities to use and embed 2012 activities for wider school improvement, meet specific school aims and targets and help you to raise the awareness of the power of sport in improving outcomes for children and young people. The activities can be delivered during or around curriculum time by teachers or students.

What does it involve?

• Going for Gold clubs are student led extra curricular activities delivered by pupils for pupils based upon the Olympic values and the Global learning key concepts. The club pack has everything in it for you to establish your club & you can also receive some support from the Extended Services team to help get you started. Assembly presentations are available to launch the club and/or the different Olympic/Paralympic values.

How we can support you

Study support colleagues will be available to offer support with however you choose to use the Going for Gold pack. This could take the form of an assembly or an input to senior management or perhaps a session supporting the young people involved in the club. However, we will struggle to provide individual school advice if the demand is great. Therefore we strongly encourage schools to work in their clusters.

Other options:

• Going for Gold Study Centre programme – based at Grendon Outdoor Education centre, combines the values and concepts with challenging and exciting outdoor activities. The programme can be tailored to address school priorities – G & T, disengaged or ‘coasting’ pupils, pupils with low self-esteem or self confidence. The programme can also be focused on a particular subject.

• Going for Gold Holiday activities/Summer Challenge – based at Northamptonshire Study Centres and their respective professional sports clubs (Cobblers, Saints, Steelbacks, Diamonds, Corby, Grendon and Silverstone). This programme can also be used to support KS2/3 transition for vulnerable pupils or just as a fun confidence-boosting holiday activity programme.
